K.S.P.E. Members Help With MathCounts

by Ben Clark

For how many prime numbers between 10 and 100 is the last digit also a prime number?

Finding the problem difficult?  Try doing it while being timed, in direct competition with a peer.  Not only that but add in a hundred or so strangers looking on and the pressure is intense.  This is exactly what the middle school students go through every year at MathCounts. Each year the KWC Chapter of KSPE helps proctor and grade tests for the Green River regional MathCounts competition held at Madisonville Community College.  The students ages 10 - 14 go through individual exams, one group test, and a final oral competition.  It is always a valuable experience for us to interact with local engineers and schools, for which we are grateful.

The answer, by the way, is 11.
