PITTCON Field Trip

World's Largest Instrumentation Convention

Orlando, Florida
March 7-12, 1999

K.W.C. chemistry majors under the leadership of professors Henry Connor and both Bob and Nancy Flachskam trekked to Orlando, Florida to attend the 50th Anniversary Pittsburgh Conference and Exposition on Analytical Chemistry and Applied Spectroscopy during Spring Break.

On the way to Florida, the group stopped in Atlanta to meet Dr. John Brock, 1981 K. W.C. graduate, for a tour of the laboratories at the Center for Disease Control.

The PITTCON meeting, with over 30,000 attendees and the world's largest exposition of scientific instrumentation, began in Pittsburgh in 1949 but soon outgrew the facilities of that city. K.W.C. chemistry majors, Pat Glancy, Rachel Pharris, Brandon Quisenberry, Keith Quisenbeny, Brandon Tackett, and Jason Tbatcher attended scientific lectures, discussed instrumentation with manufacturers representatives, and entered in contests to win super calculators and Pain Pilots.

To celebrate its 50th anniversary, the organizers rented out the Magic Kingdom at Disney World one evening. The group from K. W.C. had equal amounts of fun watching their colleagues from all over the world ride Dumbo and other harrowing Disney machines and reliving their lost youth doing the same thing.

Dr. Connor typically takes the students to PITTCON every other year, but this group is plotting to get a trip to the meeting next year in New Orleans.
