We think these are the largest cowbells we have ever seen!!

Feb 18,2001 we celebrated President's Day at the Mirje Trattoria with our friends from the Institut Josef Stefan.  Eva, Janez and Zoran were our first guests. Eva brought us the pretty flower in Nancy's favorite color! Many people have had them in their windows since January giving some cheer to the gray, rainy days.
Nancy, Marjeta and Vesna . Our pizza was ready and Henry wanted a picture. Vesna is a physicist from Croatia who is collaborating with Marjeta.
Milan Shara is the leader of the Electron Paramagnetic Resonance group that Henry is working in.

Susan and Milan talking about Texas.  Our elaborate decorations can be seen in the background.
This is the elegant courtroom in the old Law School of the University of Ljubljana.  We were there the day after our party to see Janez receive his diploma . He was being granted his Doctorate in Physics. We were very happy to be present for such  an honorable accomplishment.
A view of a side balcony and a door below it.  It was a gray day and our flash didn't give quite enough light.  Nonetheless, the  elegance of  this room is evident.
Dr.Milan Shara is second from left.  The four men in the front with gold chains  were deans of different colleges within the U.of Ljub. Janez is accepting his diploma.
Natasha's mother, Janez's father, mother, sister, brother, Janez and his wife, Natasha holding the precious diploma.
A happy couple.  Janez and Natasha have a  little girl, Ursha.
Again we apologize for a fuzzy picture .  On the left is Robert Jaeger, a Fulbright Scholar in bio-mechanical engineering.  He was getting ready to give a lecture about his research into stimulation of abdominal muscles to achieve a forceful cough in people with spinal cord injuries.
From left to right, Dr. Peter Stegnar, Dr. Robert Jaeger and Dr. Uros Stanic  after the lecture. Dr. Stanic serves as Bob's host and research collaborator
Bob showed Dr. John Morrison, another Fulbright fellow,  and Nancy, his experimental setup at Institut Josef Stefan.
Bob was bringing up his animated pictures of the chest movement monitored by a  board which has a grid on it . The person has electrodes taped on the chest and the four cameras take pictures of the chest. Using mathematical  triangulation measurements the electrode  positions and  movement are simulated on the computer.
This is the complete setup with cameras, the bed,and the grid that would be placed over the chest to make the measurements of the  distance the electrodes  moved with each breath.

"Pust," Ljubljana style. Henry was our lone family member present.
This a tent set up by students in Kongressni Trg.  There is an ice skating rink on the other side. Many people use this park/square to go down to the old town, to visit or to cross one of the major streets, Slovenska, by way of an under- the- street  walkway.   The Pust witch is watching the tent hoping other friends will stop and join her.

The four friendly Pustites.  In the background  are buildings in the oldest part of the city across the river.
Two kids ready to celebrate Pust at The Rose. Proud Papa is off to the side.
This little pub has very beautiful wood, and the most interesting  little people at the corners of the counter.
This young lady on the white pony was announcing the beginning of the Pust celebration .
A friendly group of costumed students. This is a better view of the park.
This is the cutest set of costumes we have seen in a long time. While Henry was in Ljubljana, Susan and Nancy went to Ptuj to see the final weekend of Pust.  They saw a big parade .  As in the first parade, other towns outside of Ptuj joined in, plus a group of Koranti from Austria.  Their mask design was more ferocious looking than the Ptuj version..  It had a hairy body, but a formed skin-toned  mask with horns.
You may think you have seen all the Pust pictures, but we have about 4 for next week's page. This is a view of the stage in Kongressni Trg.
