After our tour of the city of Ljubljana, we had an excellent meal at the Wolf  Gostilna in the old town. Seen here is the oven and serving bar.  This restaurant had a very medieval atmosphere.
This happy fellow is Rok, one of our first Slovenian contacts that first week in January. He is a manager in the  "Mirje Trattoria Restaurant". The Mirje is on Trzaska Ceste. This is one of our main traveling streets and will be seen again later.
This is a lovely Catholic church near the castle hill in Ljubljana.
A cute arch near the castle hill.
This view shows the rooftops from halfway up path to the Ljubljana castle.  Many of the roofs in the old area need to be repaired.  This one looks like a work in progress.
Henry is standing underneath the back of the castle.  We found an old dirt trail which joined the new cement trail at the top. We saw three people come up, circle the top and head back down-a nice place for daily exercise.
We are approaching  the back side of the Ljubljana castle. It has a solid look to it.  The day had a blue sky, but the breeze was cold.

A view of the city and the mountains from a castle tower. There are neat clouds in the sky too.
Mountains are visible in the background  of the city. At the bottom of the picture is the market and straight up from there is a  well used street that  accesses the old city from the center.
This picture was taken  because of the mountains. We  were at one of the castle walls.
What a great view of the market and the city again. We wanted to show the different types of buildings in this old part of the city
Nancy's famous sauerkraut lady.  She gave her three handfuls.  She was able to only eat one handful and will decrease her order next time.
There are three buckets of different sauerkrauts. In the first  can be seen  flat pickled heads of cabbage.  The second bucket has long strands of sauerkraut and the last contains chopped sauerkraut.  The fellow on Nancy's right was buying a cup of cabbage juice .  He said it was good for his health.
We found this beautiful house on one of our walks.  Nancy loves the creamy color and style.
The Old Rozna Dolina church on the highest hill  in Tivoli Park. We had a steep climb to get to it.  We can see it from our windows on Postojnska Ceste. At night it is lit with lights.
Courtney is a young woman from Washington DC, who is working at the embassy as an intern.  Nancy met her a week before the Preseren party held by  our friend Bob Jaeger from the Fulbright group.  This is Bob's apartment.  It is a second floor flat about 5-6 blocks from our apartment.
Courtney in the closeup of the pre-meal snacks. Prosciutto, cheese and crackers, and carrots.  Everything was very tasty.
John Morrison and Bob Jaeger are getting ready to toast France Preseren, the most famous Slovene poet. This was Feb 8,2001, the official day set aside to celebrate Preseren and all Slovene culture. National awards were given to artists, writers, musicians, dramatists and other people who have made cultural  contributions.
Robert and Susan Fortney are from Lubbock, Texas. Susan is a Fulbright teacher in law.  Her area of expertise is  ethics and procedural law. Seated is Nancy Connor.
Antiques decorate Bob's 2nd floor apt. The large brown object once served as the room heater.  Fuel was inserted through a door at the bottom.  The heavy ceramic would radiate the heat after the fire had died down. We are in the living room looking into the bedroom.
A picture of France Preseren.
Bob showing off his running suit.  The newly renovated kitchen is behind him.
Bob .toasting  Preseren, after reading one of his  poems.
Susan getting ready to ask one of her famous questions. She and Henry are a bundle of questions when they get together.
John with flower and many flower holders. John is an anesthesiologist from Colorado. His Fulbright activities include working in a hospital and collaborating on research projects.
Masa and Tomas are Slovene friends of Bob. Masa works for the city organizing  conventions. Tomas  is an engineer.
