March10,2001 Lake Bled--Nancy Flachskam and Nancy Connor.

Nancy and Bob with their lunch special at the Gostilna Hawk. They split kielbasa and bratwurst  and ate the sauerkraut and mashed potatoes.  The lemonade was very strong!  Dessert on the house was a delicious ball of rumcake.
Bob Flachskam at the edge of Lake Bled 2 hrs after landing.  He was really thinking "I wish I had my longjohns ".  It was sunny when we  left the airport, but then the wind picked up and dropped the temperature a little.
Lake Bled  with the island that has a small churchon it.
A view of Lake Bled from the castle terrace .
This is a tower of the castle in Bled.  People have been coming to Bled because of the clean air and warm water since  the 1600's.
A view of the valley to the north from the wall of the Bled Castle.
The Bled Castle gate opening  with Nancy Flachskam going through it.  We could see the mechanism to draw the gate closed. Nancy also liked the walk way with the small openings above the gate.
This is  gostilna Erika from our famous  Vrsic Pass  experience in January.  This time we drove from the town of Kranska Gora, but were unable to drive beyond the gostilna due to snow and ice in the pass.  Nancy and Bob were happy to eat at a restaurant named after their older daughter.
Nancy and Bob chose turkey fillet and mashed potatoes after a bowl of beef noodle soup. Henry had veal and Nancy had a vegetable plate.
The Triglav mountains near Kranska Gora. At this time the water level is low, but when the snow melts, this area will be covered with water.
Nancy F. touched the Adriatic and nearly froze.  This was Sunday, March 11 in Piran,Slovenia.
Bob wanted to play in the Adriatic too.  The water was very clear that day.
Nancy and Bob don't look at all at ease on the pier.  It was foggy beyond the boat in the background.
   Finally they found their pose.
This statue represents the composer Guiseppe Tartini (1692-1770), a  resident of Piran.  Behind him is the church of St.George.   Two weeks after this visit, Arba Kenner and Nancy came for a visit and walked up to the church.  Unfortunately it was locked, but the view from the wall was great.   They could look down on the plaza Tartinijev and see people rollerblading and strolling around.
A lovely government building of Piran  at the edge of the marble Tartinijev Plaza .
This is where we ate lunch in Piran-out on the boardwalk. It was sunny when we sat down, but the fog had rolled back in by 3pm. This lunch took 3 hours because to the big Sunday crowd.  We had a great meal.
Bob was about to be kissed by a fish!  OHHH Lucky  Bob.  They had a platter of squid, octopus, sea bass and scampi and as you can see all that is left is the fishhead and the lemon.  From there we headed for Trieste, Italy.
A street in Trieste, Italy.  We were just leaving the industrial area and entering the downtown .
A train station in Trieste.
Going up the street in Trieste.  To our left is a grassy tree lined area that follows the coast in downtown Trieste, but the sun was low and from that direction, so we couldn't get a picture.  The promenade was very crowded  and we are told that Sunday is the big day for strolling and visiting with family and friends.
The promenade  in Trieste. We were looking for a parking place.  It was a sunny, pleasant day and many people were out walking.
Here is a view of the cliffs around Trieste.  They are white, because of limestone.  We also see a redhead in the crowd.  Is this a premonition ?
Nancy, Henry and Bob on the promenade.  The crowd was beginning to thin..  The width allowed groups of conversing people to keep moving without separating as groups came from the other direction.  We suspected that  it had recently been renovated since some tree boxes had not received their trees yet.
The cliffs above the promenade.  There are houses in the area of the green trees.  The posts mark a spot where a tree will be planted.

Nancy and Bob were wishing they could go out on the paddlewheeler.  The next time they come to Italy maybe they can  paddle around the Adriatic Sea.
This marina is next to the promenade.
